Discovery the Art of Indian Buddhism Seminar

Goal

One of the purposes for Dharma Drum University is to cultivate and increase students’ aesthetic and the ability to appreciate the art. Other then the on campus learning, field studies are also important as well.  Therefore, DDM organize related courses and hopefully to let students become the volunteer for the art.

Course introductions

The “discovery of India” course has invited three well known Buddhist art scholars: Prof. Lin, Baoyao; Prof. Chen, qingxing; and Prof. Chen, yikai teaching the change of Buddhist art from India to Taiwan. Other then introduce the Buddhist statue of origin of ancient India, mainly focus on how it has developed from central Asia、Western Region、Hexi Corridor to China. In China, it has went through several different stages like:  “Weijin”、”Nanbeichao”、”Suitang”、”Songyuan” dynasties.  Also, leading students to learn about the different features of Buddhist art in Taiwan.
In the field study of “Discovery Indid”, we will take a trip to India visiting several important Buddhist sites and museums.
From the photography class, we will learn how to taking photos, in order to take good pictures for the field study and researches.

Education: Ph. D. candidate of history at Zhongzhen University

2009 the Art of Asia Buddhism Camp

Continue the successful experience

Between Jan. 26th to Jan. 30th of 2008, we have held 14 lectures regarding the art of Asia and Taiwan temples in Banqiao Culture Square. The total enrollments were about 210 people.  Within this enrollments, there were over 50 graduate program students and the rest are coming from different college students、researchers、museum guides、tour guides、architects、designers、carvers and other people who was interested in this topics. Therefore, the interdisciplinary academic exchange has became a special character of this event.

New topic: Sutra and images

To extend the Art and Asia Buddhism Camp from previous year, the topic has been set as “Sutra and Images”, in combine the two important topics for Buddhism art – sutra and images to develop the understanding of Buddhism literature.

The benefits and Expectations

With this opportunity to gather all the students and scholars and learn the origins and changes of Buddhism art.  Also, assemble all the lecture context and audio and visual materials to create the digital learning course and letting more people to learn about the Buddhism art through a internet course.
