Goal

One of the purposes for Dharma Drum University is to cultivate and increase students’ aesthetic and the ability to appreciate the art. Other then the on campus learning, field studies are also important as well.  Therefore, DDM organize related courses and hopefully to let students become the volunteer for the art.

Course introductions

The “discovery of India” course has invited three well known Buddhist art scholars: Prof. Lin, Baoyao; Prof. Chen, qingxing; and Prof. Chen, yikai teaching the change of Buddhist art from India to Taiwan. Other then introduce the Buddhist statue of origin of ancient India, mainly focus on how it has developed from central Asia、Western Region、Hexi Corridor to China. In China, it has went through several different stages like:  “Weijin”、”Nanbeichao”、”Suitang”、”Songyuan” dynasties.  Also, leading students to learn about the different features of Buddhist art in Taiwan.
In the field study of “Discovery Indid”, we will take a trip to India visiting several important Buddhist sites and museums.
From the photography class, we will learn how to taking photos, in order to take good pictures for the field study and researches.

Continue the successful experience

Between Jan. 26th to Jan. 30th of 2008, we have held 14 lectures regarding the art of Asia and Taiwan temples in Banqiao Culture Square. The total enrollments were about 210 people.  Within this enrollments, there were over 50 graduate program students and the rest are coming from different college students、researchers、museum guides、tour guides、architects、designers、carvers and other people who was interested in this topics. Therefore, the interdisciplinary academic exchange has became a special character of this event.

New topic: Sutra and images

To extend the Art and Asia Buddhism Camp from previous year, the topic has been set as “Sutra and Images”, in combine the two important topics for Buddhism art – sutra and images to develop the understanding of Buddhism literature.

The benefits and Expectations

With this opportunity to gather all the students and scholars and learn the origins and changes of Buddhism art.  Also, assemble all the lecture context and audio and visual materials to create the digital learning course and letting more people to learn about the Buddhism art through a internet course.

Focusing on Aesthetics education, emphasize the interchange usage of “traditional photography” and “Digital Photography”.
Throughthe images learning to raise their sense of beauty, and further understand the essence of photography.  With the learning of the beauty of light and shadow art, to show and express the deep feelings and caring of the universe.  Let photography become a healthy leisure activity.
Goal: This class is to emphasis “theory” and “practice”.  With introduction of topics to teach students the necessary skills, it also emphasis on field practice to gain students experience.

Instead of the lecture method of Asia Buddhism art throughout the whole Asia, this camp focus on introduce the development of Buddhist sculpture in Dingzhou, Hebei Province of China and the image meaning of stone carving in the Great Stupa at Sanchi in India. Both places have very abundant Buddhist culture and found a large number of stone carving arts. Students will understand in-depth of Buddhist sculpture for both places. Invited lectures have many years of field research experience and also a book published. Topic:

(1) Gansu Buddhist Grottoes Archaeology

Gansu is the hub and the necessary path to the Silk Road, located at the important gateway between the Western Region and Central China. Gansu was the first affecting area when Buddhism came from Central Asia through the Western Region spread into the Mainland China; at the same time, the majority rulers of "Sanqin", and "Wuliang" in Gansu were either believed or respected Buddhism. Buddhist Grottoes in Gansu Province have become well established. In Gansu has the most number of grottoes been built through different time frames and by different ethnics in different areas through out the whole of China, which present strong local characteristics. In this seminar, the speaker will share his enjoyment and hardship of archaeological experience over the past few decades in Gansu to explore and reveal the research of Grottoes in Gansu and its glorious history of elegance.

(2)Xinjiang Buddhist Mural Appreciation

Xinjiang, used to be called Western Region, is the first area accepting Buddhism in China which contents different ethnics and rich cultures. Xinjiang is the other necessary path to the Silk Road. With the introduction of Buddhism into Xinjiang, Buddhism and Buddhist culture has become popular among people in the area; the Grottoes and temples have been built throughout the Xinjiang. This seminar will introduce several different remaining Buddhist grottoes, temples, colorful murals, and statues in Xinjiang to reveal the Buddhist culture and the unique charm of its high artistic achievements in Xinjiang

Speaker:

Mr Dong, Yuxiang， Former researcher of institute of archaeology in Gansu Province。Mr. Dong joined the Institute of archaeology in Gansu since 1961, who is also a student of famous grottoes archaeologist Prof. Yen, Wenru in Beijing University. In the past fifty years, Mr. Dong has been to all different grottoes in Gansu and other major grottoes in China. With his in depth research in these ancient sites, he has tremendous contribution to China, especially to Gansu Grottoes.
